Abstract

The study examines how the emergence of artificial intelligence has affected the journalism profession. First, it presents when the changes related to online technology appeared in the history of journalism, and then it explores the areas in which artificial intelligence applications can be adapted in the workflows of content generation, distribution, and moderation. The article also reviews what editorial regulations have appeared in the past year regarding the acceptable and ethical use of artificial intelligence. The study then describes a two-stage empirical research on Hungarian journalists. The empirical study consisted of a qualitative in-depth interview part and a quantitative questionnaire study. In the qualitative phase, in October 2023, we conducted 40 in-depth interviews with Hungarian journalists. Based on this experience, we conducted a questionnaire survey with 83 respondents in the spring of 2024. The study presents and analyzes the data obtained in an international context.
